Fully automatic roto tools are fast, but on real production plates they chatter at the edges, lose hair detail, ignore motion blur and drift from frame to frame. Manual roto is accurate, but slow and expensive at volume. NVFX Studio combines the two.
We built our own AI toolset for matte generation, matte extraction, removals and roto. It produces a first pass across the whole sequence, which our senior artists then refine where accuracy matters — edges, hair, overlaps and motion blur — before a supervisor reviews every frame.
Because the labour-heavy first pass is automated, you pay artists for finishing rather than busywork. That means lower cost per shot and faster turnarounds, without the machine artifacts that make pure-AI vendors a risk on client-facing work.

Is AI rotoscoping as accurate as manual roto?
On its own, not always — which is why we never ship raw AI output. Our AI produces the first pass, then senior artists refine edges, hair and motion blur and a supervisor reviews every frame, so the result meets the same standard as hand roto.
Which shots benefit most from AI-assisted roto?
Long sequences, repeat characters, crowds and background isolation, depth mattes and plates where the green screen failed. Hero close-ups with complex hair still get extensive artist time — the AI simply removes the busywork.
Do we get editable shapes or only mattes?
Both are available. We deliver standard alpha mattes as EXR or DPX, and editable roto shapes where your pipeline needs them — nothing you receive depends on our tools.
How does AI roto affect the price?
Because the first pass is automated, the time we bid is mostly artist finishing, which lowers the cost per shot on suitable work. Every shot is still bid individually, and quotes are free.
